  • Practice Slip Due:

Items to note this week! September 12 – September 16

    Hello LMS Band parents/students:

Items to note this week, September 12 – September 16:

    • Practice slips are due September 12th for all bands!

Please encourage your child to be responsible for coming to you to get the slip signed, not the other way around! 100 minutes per week is required and is 40% of the grade! For those without instruments, I will take that into account, please don’t worry!

    • The start of the year is a great time to start getting into a really good practice routine. What seems to work well is to get the instrument out of its case and put together to have it ready to go as soon as the student gets home from school. If it is always ready the student is more likely to play more during the evening hours. I also suggest for beginners to practice in 15-20 minute intervals. This allows the muscles to rest and recover. Please be sure that only the band student touches the instrument. Little brothers and sisters are extremely curious, but that curiosity may mean a damaged instrument.

Most classes received the “How to Practice Properly” guide on Friday. I will get this to the rest of the classes on Monday. If parents are interested in taking a look at how we’re trying to set up goals, here is the link to the handout – http://dev-lms-band.audibleim.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/How-To-Practice-Properly.pdf

    • The 6th grade bands are making some excellent sounds! They should be practicing pages 6, 7, 8 & trying to go to page 9. Also, if you haven’t done so yet, parents should take a few minutes with your child and read through pages 2-5 so that you may have a better understanding of what they’re trying to accomplish with the instrument. I talk about tips and tricks for each of the instruments daily. You may want to ask if there was anything mentioned regarding their instrument. This week will be the first of our weekly playing tests. A playing test will be given every Thursday. The students will have the beginning of the week to prepare. The test this week is over #18 on page 8.

    • The 7th and 8th grade bands are sounding GREAT. They should be practicing Ab, Db & Gb concert scales this week. They should also be practicing “Parade America”, “Agent P” (both have to be memorized), “The Challenger”, “WSU Fight Song”, “Calgary March” and “Thunder Bay March”. The bands will be getting one more new piece this week so there should be quite a bit of practicing going on at home. We will start marching outside this week as well. It is extremely important for everyone to have both “Parade America” & “Agent P” memorized this weekend!!! It really does make the marching easier.

    • 7th and 8th grade Jazz band – Another update – Mrs. Covill will have surgery on Tuesday this week. Because of this we will have to push the starting date out one more day. We will start Thursday, September 15th at 7:30am in the band room! This band is open to any and all 7th and 8th grade band students. We meet throughout the school year on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

    • The Audition materials for Jr. All-State are available. If your 8th grader is interested in trying out for All-State please have them talk to me and I will get them the information this week. I have about 6 students that have shown interest in this wonderful opportunity. Please speak with your child about this and let me know if you have any questions. I will start working with students this week on sections of the material.

    Upcoming events:

October 8 – The 7th/8th grade marching band will march in the UI Homecoming Parade in Moscow. (Saturday morning)

October 19 – This is our annual March in October Concert featuring the 7th/8th grade marching and concert bands. (7:30pm – LMS gymnasium)
