Notes from Mr. C – LMS Bands October 13 – October 18
Hello LMS Band parents/students:
Items to note this week, October 13 – October 18:
•      Practice slips are due Monday, October 13, for all bands! Here is the link to print the slip or they are always at the front of the room. – http://dev-lms-band.audibleim.com/practice-slip
•      6th Grade Band
All students should have their first 8 notes memorized! Please review all pages we have worked on so far this year. Be very sure you can play all of the music on pages 6-11. The focus pages for this week are pages 12-13! The playing test this Thursday is the scale at the top of page 37 (just the scale and note the chorale at the end). We will work on this in class a lot so everyone can be successful in this area. Students should always use page 6 and 7 for their warm up. (A typical practice session should consist of a warm-up, practice things the student hasn’t yet perfected, and end with something fun like Fajita or Louie, Louie.)
Also, here is a link to an instrument care page that I have set up on our web page. http://dev-lms-band.audibleim.com/bands/instrument-care/ Please remember to complete the quiz with your child so you are able to help with care of your child’s instrument. I will go over care instructions with the instruments that aren’t listed with those students needing help.
(The quiz was deleted by accident, at some point, last year. It should be ther now!)
•      7th and 8th Grade Bands
THIS IS CONCERT AND PARADE WEEK!!! Lots of practice needs to happen this week at home!!! Our concert is October 16 at 7:30pm in the LMS gymnasium. (Black and White clothing) Also, the UI homecoming parade is this Saturday, October 18. I handed out the itinerary and assumption of resposibility form to all students on Friday for them to take home and get signed. Please have that form back to Mr. Covill on Monday. (form is on our site as well)
Practice – Parade America, Happy, Pep Rally Rock (march in place starting with your left foot.) Also – Mickey Mouse March, Sousa Sousa Sousa, Honor March, March Del Mar, March to Castle Rock, Courage March, Colonel Bogey March.  The students will not take a test in class this week.
I have heard that there may be an issue with cross country participants and Thursday’s concert. I have spoken to Mr. Pollestad and let him know my concerns and would love if parents would contact him directly and voice concerns as well.  The cross country event was scheduled on top of our concert which had been scheduled since last spring. It is my hope that parents are able to make this work by getting the students back on time as this concert is what they have been working toward since the beginning of this school year.

Why Should I Practice?
Because when you have the courage to get your instrument, assemble it, and go, you are cultivating the emotional skills of the “can do†person.
Because when you learn to encounter each challenge you face in your music with a nonjudgmental, gentle willingness to try again, you learn how to strive in a positive way.
Because the awareness that you cultivate when playing your instrument keeps you connected to your body, emotions, and thought processes, which is an awareness that — if cultivated — can lead to great understanding of one’s self. This process can be painful. However, that pain does not compare to the pain of reaching the end of your life, only to realize that you never really understood yourself, that you never really lived authentically.
Because in music there is a great capacity to cultivate self-love and discipline, a powerful combination. Through our instrument we are teaching ourselves to love ourselves, and this is hard work, but worth it.
Because all that you learn when learning an instrument, if you are really paying attention, also teaches you how to be a better human being, how to appreciate and live life fully. So, even if you quit playing some day, you are still all the richer for your experience.
Because when you make yourself vulnerable enough to perform for other people, you expand your ability to feel the full range of human emotion, you learn what it really means to be alive as a human being.
Because when you share music with others, you remind them that there is something untouchable, ungraspable about being alive, that there are forces beyond our capacity to comprehend, and getting a glimpse of that mystery is a beautiful thing.← Notes from Mr. C – LMS Bands October 6 – October 10 Notes from Mr. C – LMS Bands October 20 – October 24 →
