    Notes from Mr. C – LMS Bands – January 25 – January 29

    Hello LMS Band parents/students:
    Items to note this week, January 25 – January 29: 

    Practice slips are due tomorrow, Monday, January 25, for all bands!  Here is the link to print the slip or the students can always pick one up at the front of the room. – http://dev-lms-band.audibleim.com/practice-slip

    The SEWMEA Regional Solo/Small Ensemble Festival is quickly approaching.  For those of you performing, PLEASE practice your parts until you can’t make any mistakes.

    6th Grade Band
    The test this week is on Thursday and will be over #9 on page 41 (and make-up tests.
    Practice:  Page 6 – 21, and 22.  Continue work on pages 23 and 36 (especially the last half of page 36 which isn’t coming together as fast as I had hoped).  Page 22 is our focus pages this week.  We will also continue using the class tuner.
    Students should always use page 6, 7, and 8 for their warm up.  These pages should probably be memorized by now. Low and Slow!  (A typical practice session should consist of a warm-up, practice things the student hasn’t yet perfected, and end with something fun like Fajita or Star Wars (on our website).

    7th Grade Band
    The test this week will be Eb major, natural minor, and harmonic minor scales at your tempo.
    Make sure you can play your Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, F major, natural minor, and harmonic minor scales with eighth notes at quarter note = 120.
    Practice: Scales, Chorales, Avenger, As the Robin to the Meadow, Fanfare, and Solstice Dance.

    8th Grade Band
    The test this week will be Bb major, natural minor, and harmonic minor scales at your tempo.
    Make sure you can play your Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, F major, natural minor, and harmonic minor scales with eighth notes at quarter note = 120.
    Practice: Scales, Chorales, Beyond the Ridge, Covington Square and The Witch and The Saint.

    7th and 8th Grade Jazz Band 1
    In the last  couple of days I have been given a lot of information about the incredible opportunity offered to us by the Washington Music Educators Association.  I will send home a letter with your child this week about performing at this year’s WMEA State Conference in Yakima.  Very, Very Big Deal!!
    Make sure you are set up and ready to go at 7:30am in the band room.
    Practice – Room 806 (memorized), Hamp’s Boogie, One Eyed Jack, Soul Bossa Nova, Moondance, Phat Kat, Moon Glow – we will revisit This Little Light of Mine as well.

    7th and 8th Grade Jazz Band 2
    Make sure you are set up and ready to go at 7:30am in the band/orchestra room.
    Practice – Pick Yourself Up, All the Way, and Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps.  Mrs. Covill will be in on Wednesday of this week to work with Strings on their parts.  Make sure you have your part nailed so you don’t get the evil eye from either of us!!! 🙂

    6th Grade Jazz Band
    March 7 – 6th Grade Jazz Band Begins – Open to all 6th grade band students.  Meeting times are Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:30am – 8:15am

    Why Should I Practice?

    Because when you have the courage to get your instrument, assemble it, and go, you are cultivating the emotional skills of the “can do” person.

    Because when you learn to encounter each challenge you face in your music with a nonjudgmental, gentle willingness to try again, you learn how to strive in a positive way.

    Because the awareness that you cultivate when playing your instrument keeps you connected to your body, emotions, and thought processes, which is an awareness that — if cultivated — can lead to great understanding of one’s self. This process can be painful. However, that pain does not compare to the pain of reaching the end of your life, only to realize that you never really understood yourself, that you never really lived authentically.

    Because in music there is a great capacity to cultivate self-love and discipline, a powerful combination. Through our instrument we are teaching ourselves to love ourselves, and this is hard work, but worth it.

    Because all that you learn when learning an instrument, if you are really paying attention, also teaches you how to be a better human being, how to appreciate and live life fully. So, even if you quit playing some day, you are still all the richer for your experience.

    Because when you make yourself vulnerable enough to perform for other people, you expand your ability to feel the full range of human emotion, you learn what it really means to be alive as a human being.

    Because when you share music with others, you remind them that there is something untouchable, ungraspable about being alive, that there are forces beyond our capacity to comprehend, and getting a glimpse of that mystery is a beautiful thing.
